Valley of the Catawissa in Autumn — Thomas Moran, circa 1862

Moran visited Catawissa, Pennsylvania, to prepare illustrations for a magazine article about its railroad. In this painting, he left the railway out. Autumn trees and rolling hills occupy the valley without the machinery that had brought him there.

The original oil painting is held by Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
